Routine Health Care
Wellness Checks
Our veterinarians are very experienced in performing routine wellness checks. During the examination, our veterinarians will perform a physical examination which involves listening to your pet’s heart and lungs, looking at their eyes, ears, skin and teeth as well palpating (feeling) their abdomen. This exam also involves discussing and addressing any concerns you may have regarding your pet’s weight, behaviour, diet, skin and any lumps or bumps that you may have noticed. We also encourage discussing tick prevention, parasite control and your pet’s vaccination schedule with the veterinarian at that time.
Senior Exams
As your pet grows older, their lifestyle undergoes significant changes. Aging animals are more susceptible to various age-related conditions, such as osteoarthritis and dental issues. Many of these ailments have a gradual onset, making them challenging to detect, but also more manageable when identified and treated early.
For this reason, it becomes even more crucial to schedule regular wellness checkups for your senior pet at our clinic. During these appointments, our experienced veterinarians will conduct a thorough examination of your pet’s skin to identify any unusual lumps or bumps. They will also assess your pet’s dental health, heart, lungs, joints, eyes, and other vital organ systems.
Additionally, your veterinarian will take the time to discuss the appropriate frequency for dental care and recommend essential blood tests tailored to your pet’s specific needs. By proactively addressing these issues during wellness checks, we can help ensure your aging companion enjoys a healthier and more comfortable life. Your pet’s well-being remains our top priority.
Puppy & Kitten Exams
Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your family is an exciting moment! The timing for your first veterinary appointment depends on your new pet’s age and the vaccinations they’ve received prior to joining your home. We highly recommend reaching out to one of our clinics to discuss your puppy or kitten’s vaccination schedule and to arrange an appointment.
During this initial visit, your veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination and weigh your puppy or kitten. They will also engage in a comprehensive conversation about various topics, including vaccinations, microchipping, dietary recommendations, flea and tick prevention, deworming, and the important matter of desexing. In the case of puppies, our clinics offer Puppy Preschool classes that are immensely beneficial for behaviour and socialization. The timing of desexing can vary depending on your pet’s breed, and it’s a crucial discussion to have with your veterinarian during this examination.
At Marburg Veterinary Clinic, we are committed to providing the best care for your new furry family member, and we look forward to assisting you in raising a happy and healthy pet. Please don’t hesitate to contact us to schedule your first appointment and discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
De-Sexing
We strongly advocate for the routine desexing of animals that are not part of a breeding program as a means to mitigate potential health and behavioral issues. Desexed animals typically face a lower risk of various diseases and health conditions, such as mammary cancer and urinary infections in females, and prostate problems in males. Additionally, desexing often helps reduce behavioral problems like wandering, aggression, and urine marking in males, while in females, it can prevent unwanted mating behaviors and the occurrence of false or unintended pregnancies.
The ideal age for desexing can vary significantly based on your pet’s breed, so it’s essential to have a thorough discussion about this with your veterinarian. While desexing is often classified as a routine surgical procedure, it should not be underestimated. Even though it is performed routinely in our hospitals, it is a major surgery that demands a high level of surgical expertise and meticulous care. We prioritize the health and well-being of your pet throughout the entire process, from monitoring them during the surgery to their recovery and beyond.
Effective aftercare is just as critical as the surgery itself in ensuring a smooth recovery for your pet. Our veterinarians and nurses will ensure you have all the necessary home care information to facilitate a problem-free recovery for your pet post-surgery. Your pet’s comfort and health are our utmost concern, and we are committed to providing the highest standard of care throughout the desexing process.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations play a crucial role in safeguarding the overall well-being of your pet by preventing or minimizing the impact of infectious diseases, some of which can lead to severe health complications and, in certain cases, even be fatal. Dogs typically receive vaccinations against Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Bordetella (commonly known as Canine Cough). Cats, on the other hand, are commonly vaccinated against Herpes, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (commonly known as Cat AIDS).
At our clinic, we adhere to the latest vaccination guidelines established by the Australian Veterinary Association. These guidelines recommend that young animals receive an initial series of vaccines, followed by a combination of triennial and annual boosters once they reach adulthood. Each pet’s vaccination program is tailored to their specific needs, and your veterinarian will provide you with a detailed outline and schedule during your pet’s initial wellness check. It’s important to note that vaccinations constitute one of the most critical components of your pet’s annual routine wellness appointment, ensuring their long-term health and protection from preventable diseases.
Worm Control
Maintaining up-to-date parasite control for your pet is of utmost importance. Common parasites that can affect your pet’s health include heartworms, intestinal worms, fleas, and ticks.
Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes. When an animal is bitten by an infected mosquito, the larval stage of the worm is deposited in the animal’s tissue, where it migrates through the body. Adult worms typically mature in about six months and are found in the heart and major blood vessels. This can lead to severe health issues, including blocked vessels, chronic infections, and heart failure.
Gastrointestinal worms are transmitted through fecal matter and can result in malnutrition, weight loss despite increased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially death.
Fleas and ticks are prevalent concerns in South-East Queensland, so we prioritize products with high efficacy in paralysis tick control. Ticks can be introduced to your property by wildlife, and all it takes is for your pet to encounter one paralysis tick to face life-threatening tick paralysis within days.
The good news is that preventing common parasites is relatively straightforward with spot-on treatments, tablets, or injections. However, it’s essential to consult with your veterinarian to determine the best parasite control method for your specific pet, as each animal may have different requirements.
Pet owners should also be aware that many parasites can be zoonotic, meaning they can potentially be transmitted from pets to humans. This underscores the importance of ensuring your pet is consistently up-to-date with parasite control measures to safeguard both their health and the well-being of your family. Don’t hesitate to discuss your pet’s parasite control needs with your veterinarian for personalized guidance and protection.
